Incident: Westjet B737 at Los Angeles on Jul 24th 2010, near collision

A Westjet Airlines Boeing 737-700, registration C-GWJK performing flight WS-1796 from Vancouver,BC (Canada) to Los Angeles,CA (USA) with 115 people on board, had aborted the first approach to runway 24L while descending through 1100 feet and was climbing back to 3000 feet, when the tower advised of a VFR traffic at the twelve o clock position (straight ahead) in 2nm quickly climbing through 1000 feets. The Westjet crew confirmed visual contact, was cleared to maintain visual separation and was handed off to Socal departure. Upon checking in on Socal departure the crew reported a TCAS resolution, they had climbed to 3500 feet looking for the traffic and then returned to the cleared 3000 feet. The airplane landed safely on runway 24R 15 minutes later. The Canadian TSB reported, that the airplane was being revectored for another approach maintaining 3000 feet, when the crew received a "Climb! Climb!" TCAS resolution advisory and during the climb saw the conflicting traffic, a Cessna 172, at their 10 o clock position at the same altitude.
